Amateur Golf: Sour Grapes as Amateurs beat Pros in historic Hudson Cup

Updated: Oct 21, 2023

Golf is supposed to be a gentleman’s game, but you would not have known if after the final results of the 2023 Hudson Cup in the Pacific Northwest. The Amateurs drilled the pros in an historic effort, but most importantly the pros walked off before the awards ceremony, leaving the amateurs hanging and forcing the Pacific Northwest Golf Association to have an abbreviated winner’s ceremony.

The Hudson Cup has been played for 75 years. Players are selected based on their past performances. Amateurs versus Professionals. In 75 appearances, the pros have won 59 times. So, when the amateurs dominated to professionals in 2023, the pros did not take it very well.

The amateurs won the matches this year 16 1/2 points to 3 1/2 for the professionals. At the end of the matches, the pros didn't take too lightly to the fact that they were dominated, so several of them left early before the awards ceremony.

One of the legacies of the event is that awards are presented after each year to honor the best players in the matches. Guys like legendary Bill Eggers, a golf professional with a stellar Hudson Cup record, have awards named after them. This year, while the awards were presented, several of the players from the losing team were not present.

"It just left a bad taste in everyone's mouths," said one player.

The Hudson Cup Matches were created in honor of Robert Hudson of Portland Golf Club in 1949. The 75th Hudson Cup Matches pairs the top 10 PNW PGA Professionals against the top 10 Pacific Northwest amateurs in matches patterned after the Ryder Cup. The 32nd Senior Hudson Cup Matches were held concurrently, where the top 10 PNW PGA senior professionals compete against the top 10 Pacific Northwest senior amateurs. The teams were selected based on their competitive records throughout the 2023 season and represent the very best of Northwest golf.
